BRIGHT-SAM RESEARCH PROJECT
The Institute is collaborating with Rigshospitalet (Danish National
Hospital), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and University of
Liverpool to conduct a clinical trial to test the effects of novel Ready to Use
Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) and a program of psychosocial stimulation on cognitive
and nutritional outcomes among malnourished children in Mwanza region.
Therefore, the Institute is inviting applications from motivated and suitably
qualified Tanzanian candidates to fill the following positions.
A. JOB
POSITION: PhD FELLOW (3 POSTS)
A PhD fellow will be expected to write a PhD study
proposal and undertake the project on the subject related to the main funded
project and submit their thesis within 36 months of PhD registration at any
reputable local University.
REPORTING: The post holder will report to the Project Principal Investigator
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
I.
Coordinate the implementation of the BRIGHT-SAM study. This will include;
a. Preparation of ethics applications,
standard operating procedures and field recruitment plans.
b.
Recruitment of study
participants and data collection in the field.
c. To represent the study
in national and international platforms.
II.
To undertake
a PhD project on the subject related
to the main funded project
and submit thesis within 36 months; and
III.
To perform
any other job-related duties as may be assigned
by the Supervisor.
QUALIFICATION AND COMPETENCE:
i.
Master’s
degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health, Nutritional Sciences,
Clinical Research, Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases or related disciplines from
a recognized University and a minimum of an upper second or overall minimum of
Grade B+ for unclassified Degrees in the Bachelor Degree;
I.
Experience of writing and publishing scientific work;
II.
The
candidate must have published at least one paper emanating from the Master’s
degree work or other scientific work or has produced equivalent scientific output;
III.

oversee development and administration of psychosocial stimulation program to children with Severe Acute
Malnutrition and Moderate Acute Malnutrition;
ii.
To oversee
community engagement aspects
of the BRIGHT-SAM trial; and
iii.
To perform

2. CLIMATCH STUDY
The Institute is collaborating with Rigshospitalet (Danish National
Hospital) and Tanzania Meteorological Agency and other partners to conduct a
study investigating the long-term effects of climate change on non-communicable
diseases (CLIMATCH Study). The Institute is inviting applications from
motivated and suitably qualified Tanzanian candidates to fill the following
positions.
B.
JOB POSITION: PhD FELLOW - NCDs TRACK (2 POSTS)
A PhD fellow will be expected to write a PhD study proposal and submit
thesis within 36 months
of PhD registration at any reputable local
University. The selected
candidate will be expected
to write PhD proposal in the area related to the main study which may
include an investigation of the effects of climate change on
cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, mental health
or other related chronic conditions.
REPORTING: The post holder will report to the
Project Principal Investigator
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
i. To assist in coordination of
implementation of the CLIMATCH study as a deputy
coordinator. This will include;
a. Preparation of ethics applications,

ii. To

related disciplines from a recognized University;
iii.
Experience of writing and publishing scientific work;

Working
experience in health research or health care of at least 2 years after
completion of internship;
vi.

C: JOB POSITION:

selected candidate will be expected to write PhD proposal in the area related
to the main study which may include an investigation of the effects of climate

3. PARENT APP PROJECT:
NIMR is collaborating with the University of Oxford, UK and University of
Cape Town, South Africa to conduct a two-arm cluster randomised controlled
trial to test the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of ParentApp (an
evidence-based parenting app for parents and caregivers of adolescents aged
10-18 years) on improving parenting, reducing violence and assessing processes
and outcomes which address parenting skills that promote holistic adolescent
development, specifically related to executive function and social integration
using a learning through play approach. The study is being conducted in two
regions - Mwanza and Shinyanga in Tanzania.
D: JOB POSITION: PRINCIPAL RESEARCH
OFFICER (1 POST)
The post holder will be responsible for managing the day-to-day
implementation of the study in Tanzania, including leading local stakeholder
and community engagement, intervention delivery, and data collection and
management. Will support the PI with research uptake and reporting activities.
REPORTING: The post holder will report to the Project Principal Investigator
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
i.
To develop research protocols, pretesting, and piloting the data
collection tools for the ParentApp Sibling Study and other related studies;
ii.
To participate in developing the capacity of junior staff,
including training local research enumerators participating in the ParentApp
Sibling Study, a 12-month follow-up study of the ParentApp study;
iii.
Coordinate the Siblings and 12-month follow-up study by planning
and overseeing all the fieldwork activities, including the timeline, community
engagement, data collection, and consent processes;
iv.
To oversee
the survey design
and translation of the data collection
materials;
v.
To monitor activities for all the field
teams involved in the study;
vi.
Liaise with NIMR and UCT/Ox teams on protocol and ethics amendments for additional follow-up as required;
vii.
To ensure that research follows the protocol approved by the
Ethics Committee (EC) and the research sponsor and any conditions imposed by
the EC;
viii.
To provide weekly fieldwork updates
to the UCT and Oxford teams on data
collection progress, milestones, successes, and challenges;

To report
regularly to the NIMR-based
PI;
x.
Periodically to conduct a quality check of
the quantitative data;

To prepare
monthly project reports
and policy briefs;

with policymakers for Policy

QUALIFICATION AND COMPETENCE:

PhD holder with at least five (4) years experience in the same position and a

candidate must have first authored at least five (5) scientific publications in
peer reviewed journals/publisher after attaining a PhD

4. RAFT PROJECT:
The Institute is collaborating with the London School of Hygiene and
Tropical Medicine to conduct a study on Resilience Against
Future Threats (RAFT) through Vector Control,
generating new research evidence to inform malaria control programmes and
global LLIN-buying agencies to ensure that national mosquito control strategies
are increasingly effective and appropriate in the face of new and changing
mosquito-borne disease threats, particularly in Africa. The Institute is
inviting applications from motivated and suitably qualified Tanzanian

POSITION: ASSISTANT DATA OFFICER
(1 POST)
The post holder will be responsible for developing, overseeing,
organizing, storing, summarizing data and data systems.
REPORTING: The post holder will report to the Project Principal Investigator

To design,
implement and maintain
database objects (tables,
views, indexes and database
security;

To troubleshoot performance and reliability issues and investigate anomalous behavior in the Database environment;
